The Anti-Bismuth Rant

A couple of years ago I fell in love with Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals foundation.  So easy to apply and so flawless!  I bought the Get Started Kit - Flawless Complexion Essentials Kit and got to work.  It was amazing.  The kit was a little on the expensive side, but expensive means good right?

In the kit you get the following:

  • Bare Minerals11 Complexion Enhancer, Concealer or BareMinerals Prime Time
  • 1 Concealer or Brightener
  • 1 BareSkin Foundation SPF 20,
  • 1 BareMinerals READY SPF 20 Foundation
  • 1 Large Original or Matte SPF 15 Foundation
  • 1 Face Brush
  • 1 Mini Prime Time Foundation Primer
  • 1 Mineral Veil finishing powder (2g / 0.07oz)
  • 1 Flawless Application Face Brush,
  • 1 Maximum Coverage Concealer Brush

I have to say the Prime Time Foundation Primer is really lovely.  It gives your face that beautiful soft glossy feel that almost any foundation I use on top of it just stays put.  The only downside is that in this kit it is only a mini version, a full size version would have been perfect as the other products in the kit are really long lasting.

The next best thing in the kit is the Mineral Veil finishing powder.  This gives your finished look a perfect airbrushed sheen, and as it is translucent you don't get a powdery face wither.  Bare Escentuals claim that it helps minimise oily breakouts, but as I have quite dry skin I can't vouch for this!

The brushes I found a bit too prickly for my liking, I found my cheaper BodyShop powder brush to be a much softer and more effective.

The concealer is very very powdery and I found it left me with the opposite of panda eyes, where even after the foundation I could still see the light product.

Hmm, the foundation... I will start with the pros... I have yet to find a foundation that is as flawless as this one.  This is including times I have had professional makeup done for events.  It is super super easy to use and made my foundation routine crazy quick.  I used the starter kit until I got the hang of the mineral makeup and then I went into Sephora and got myself a full size foundation in the right shade for me.

That's where it started to go wrong.  The shade was even more perfect than the trial pack.  Still easy to apply and now the right colour too.  The second day of use I got all dolled up for a client dinner with my other half.  Half way through the meal my face started to itch... then burn... I tried to stick it out as long as I could but I had to run to the bathroom and wash off all my makeup.  The burn lasted a good 45 minutes after that but with the help of paper towels in ice water I was able to calm my skin down.

A glutton for punishment, I went back for more the next day, blaming it on the heat - or actually anything but my amazing foundation.  Sure thing, the next day the same thing happened.  So me and Bare Minerals Foundation broke up.  I started doing research on what had caused this issue and after reading many many reviews, I found out that it is the Bismuth Oxychloride that caused this reaction.

This was the start of my hunt of a mineral makeup that was as flawless as Bare Minerals, but without the Bismuth.  I have recently read that Bare Minerals have released a new Matte formula without the Bismuth, but I daren't try it just in case!

In 2011 came across a company called EverydayMinerals (full review soon), I have to admit I went on a bit of a spree and almost bought out the whole site.  I really like their foundations, again not so impressed with the concealers or eyeshadows, but it was a relief to have a foundation that didn't make my skin burn!  I will say their brushes are amazing, softest I have ever found and the bristles don't shed.  I have finally finished my stock (yes it took me three years), and now I am on the hunt again.

I have been doing my anti-bismuth research, and I think I may have found "the one".  A company called KmS Mineral Essentials (full review to come) had been getting somegreat reviews from people with problem skin, so I thought I would try them out.  Full disclosure - I have not yet received the product - however, I cannot tell you how impressed I am with the customer service I have received so far!  Kritsi the CEO and Creator, personally answered my free consultation (an online questionnaire) and when I mentioned I may have ordered the wrong shade she immediately rectified it for me!  I am beyond impressed!  I have high hopes for this foundation, and then I fear another bulk buy is on the way!

  1. First off I want to say terrific blog! I had a
quick question that I'd like to ask if you do not mind.
I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing.
I have had a tough time clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts out.

I truly do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like
the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be wasted just trying to
figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or tips?
